UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA VETERINARY HOSPITAL - CAREER DAY

The University of Pretoria Veterinary Hospital hosted our learners who are interested in pursuing Veterinary as a career at the Onderstepoort campus. This Faculty was awarded by the Beeld readers as their favorite in the veterinary category for the year 2021. It is known to be one of a kind in the Southern African region and possibly on the whole continent of Africa. The faculty is aimed to provide world-class practical training to the final year veterinary and veterinary nursing students studying the faculty of Veterinary Science. This faculty is the only veterinary hospital in South Africa that specializes in different discipline practice that caters to Dentistry for all species, Cattle hoof health, Ophthalmology of all species, Horse medical and surgical colic management just to name a few. It is the only Veterinary facility in Africa to perform diagnostic nuclear images, known as scintigraphy to ensure that all patients get healed and all students get the training of the highest standard. 

The facility tour was hosted by Ms. Lesego Teffu who took our learners on an awesome campus adventure visiting various sites, labs and animals that are being well kept for research purposes. They began the tour at the auditorium areas that captured the history of the Veterinary Education at the University. The learners were then taken to the labs whereby they were able to see fossils of types of animals, they visited the animal museum and bone structures of types of wild and farm animals.

The learners had the opportunity to engage with Mr. Meshack Mothemane, The Lab Technician and Technical Assistant in the Anatomy and Physiology Department, as he educated them about the body structure of a dog by showing them the intestines and internal organs. He ensured the learners that these animals he was working on were donated for research purposes after they had died. That the University does not practice cruelty towards the animals as it protects and cares for them.
