Surprise Amokelane Ndlovu is a location boy who was born and raised in Soshanguve. A 25-year-old kasi boy who is from family of four, raised by a single mom with his two younger siblings making him the older brother. He is a proud Tsonga man with a Zulu surname who attended Haakdoorn Primary School in Soutpan then finished his grade seven in Lotus Gardens Primary where he preferred to associate himself with only Indian cultured people and no other different cultured person to which he recalled a “phase”. That influenced his love for cricket and he perused it throughout his primary year. He attended his high school years in Pretoria Secondary School that was situated near Oost- End Primary School. Unfortunately, due to the facility being un-resourced it discouraged Surprise’s interest to participate in any sport activities. He continued to say “...I had thought maybe grade eight’s had to attend at this facility that we had to work twice as hard to move to the neighbouring facility and that was a proper resourced school. That it only sank in after two days that we actually do not have a playground, football field and that the neighbouring school was actually a primary school’’.

He grew up most of his life with the absence of his father. He instead, only received female support in his life and needed a father figure. The only way for him to express his emotions was through writing. Surprise’s interests for words grew that it encouraged him to pursue “History” as one of his subjects. He would surround himself with friends who continuously do ciphers and dance hip hop at high school. He would join in with his poetry and writing of songs as a way to detox the burden he had carried.  Despite losing his relationship with his father he continued to build a strong one with his mother, whom he titled as “…my nigger, my hommie and confidently admits to had been a Mamma’s boy.…” . 

            

                       

Surprise finished his Matric year in 2008 and decided to take a gap year where he pursued music with a group of his friends. They would record their songs daily making commercial and deep hip hop music as they named themselves “Hip Army” (Studio Rats), unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances the computer that had obtained all their music data crashed and they had lost all the music they had worked hard for which led to the split of the group. In 2010 he pursued a National Diploma in Public Management and got his first job flipping patties at MacDonald’s in 2012. He then worked on contract at GCIS in Travel and Accommodation Supply Chain Department in 2013, then graduated in 2014. He then continued to work at GCIS in the Departmental Projects in Finance. 



Through his commitment and hard work, he was then appointed again to work in Finance as a Senior Accounting Clerk.

Despite the challenges he faced in music, Surprise still continues to push his love for music part time in a new group called Protokol. They have worked with DJ Fortee, Jay Sax, (Afrikan roots), Royalty, Silly West and Licious deep. They then released under Deepconsoul.  Surprise is also know as Lation in his music profession. He continues to balance between the corporate environment and entertainment world to pursue the things he loves most. In November, Protokol will be performing at Liquid Zone in Soshanguve and more event are yet to come.

Surprise lives by this stament: " It does not mean that if you feed them all, they are all satisfied. We are all satisfied differently, in different ways and through differrent things".
