E- ARTICLES PRESENTS TO YOU THE AUGUST ARTICLE
MALOMBO LOUNGE
BY
MFUNDO MAKHATHINI
Mfundo Makhathini is a 25 years
old Zulu man who was born and raised in the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal. He moved
to Pretoria in 1995 were he was raised by his mother after the split of his
parents. Due to the circumstances his family was experiencing, he taught
himself to adapt some qualities of manhood from his mother’s male associates,
some cleaners and those who surrounded him. He sensibly said: …. “You
can obtain any good quality of knowledge from anyone, despite their career
position”. He attended his primary school years in Hamilton Primary School,
furthered his high school years at the Way Christian School for two years and
then he decided to peruse his studies at the Tshwane South College in
2008. As the years progressed he missed his home town so he decided to
drop out during his N4 level to return back home to Durban, so he could look
for a job and as he said with a smile “home is where the heart is”.
At the age of 21 he got his first job at “Real
Promotions” as an assistant manager, he was also an advisory for other managers
at the establishment for a period of a year. Throughout the hard work he
contributed, his team was established as the best team amongst the three
offices around the country. He was then promised a promotion that had not come
to pass and that demotivated him due to the effort that he contributed to the
success of the organisation. With great distress he then decided to leave the
company to move back to Pretoria to study a health and safety short course. At
the completion of his course, he was fortunate enough to have received a job at
a “Telecommunications Company”. It was not what Mfundo wanted and it was not
part of his dreams. Mfundo had bigger aspirations for his future but for the
sake of his new family he endured either way.
[Sibusisiwe and their son] [Mfundo, his mom and cousin]
He is a happily engaged man to the
beautiful Sibusisiwe Bhengu with their love story that goes for miles. They
have a son together to complete their small family and their love is shown
through their friendliness and hospitality. She is a lovely woman who supports
and keeps Mfundo motivated throughout his career ventures.
In his career
journey things in his life took a turn when he had an “aha moment” during the
time he attended the book launch of the “Dragons” in November 2015 and with the
inspiring words of Vusi Thembekwayo quoted: “If you are not happy
with what you are doing, rather quit and let someone else who loves what they
are doing do that job better than you. You are holding back someone else’s
opportunity with something that you are not interested in, as you are not doing
it to your full potential”.
That hit home as things were not working well for
him in his career. With the support of his mother, he was able to be connected
with the right people to open up his very own “Malombo Lounge” in the beginning
of August of this year. How did he do it, he reviews a quote that inspired him
to take the risk and buy the business by Richard Branson that says: …”screw
it just do it”…and so he did.
His entrepreneurship tendencies started
during his childhood days when he used to make binoculars out of toilet rolls
and strings. He successfully convinced the neighbourhood kids that they were
just like real binoculars, he then sold them for 10 cents each and 20 cents to
the “rich kids”, he quotes. Also, during the December holidays when his father had bought him fireworks for the New Year’s celebration, he sold his
fireworks in order to make money and then bought some sweets to sell them
to make even more money. His fascinating childhood stories have helped to
path a way to drive him closer to his dreams. He has always had
a huge interest in motorbikes and it began from a very young age. His
uncle (who has passed on) was his greatest mentor and he was part of a biker’s
team. This had influenced Mfundo to now be part of the “Ama Bhubesi” (The
Lions), a biker’s club that currently does a lot of charity work to help
enhance the community’s quality of life in Durban.
With the support of the two most important women in
his life, his mother and fiancée. He is able to become the man he is today, and
it is true what they say, “behind every successful man there is a
supportive woman”. His future aspirations are to expand his
business to new locations. He beliefs in the potential of South Africans and
says “South Africans receive their motivation from proving a point of being
told, we are not capable”. It is then that the drive to achievement
is being implemented and it becomes a success. He lives a life with no limits
as he continues to challenge other ventures to see the fruits of his
entrepreneurship capabilities.
